RYA Coastal Skipper

Who is it for?

The RYA Coastal Skipper is designed for already licensed skippers who want to sail further offshore and venture on longer passages, including night sailing and night watch systems

Minimum requirements – RYA Coastal Skipper

– Minimum age: 17 years old
– 300 miles on a yacht
– 2 days as skipper
– 15 days onboard
– 8 night hours
Please note: These are the minimum requirements from the RYA, however, our experience tells us that much more sailing experience than listed above is needed, as an RYA Day Skipper as a minimum. As the expected theory knowledge level is high, it is highly recommended to take the Yachtmaster shorebased theory course, now available also as an online course HERE.

And if you just need a book to start studying ahead of the course or refresh your knowledge, you can visit our SHOP and purchase a few items there.

RYA Coastal Skipper – Program

You will be taught how to plan and execute a longer, coastal passage. We will go through route planning, weather forecast, victualling, defining ports of refuge, reviewing different watch system options and executing at least one long passage (>12 hours).
We will practice a lot of manoeuvres under sail, including the recovery of a man overboard, picking up a buoy, and sailing in confined spaces.
You will plan and execute a pilotage into unknown harbours or marina, including at night.
You will spend the week aboard our yacht, visiting many beautiful bays and harbours in Croatia.

With a maximum of 5 students per yacht, your instructors can devote plenty of time to your needs and focus the program on the areas you need most.

Exam

There is no formal exam to obtain either the Coastal Skipper certificate. The instructor will follow your progress during the week, provide you with regular feedback in what is could ‘continuous assessment’, and constantly adapting the action plan to cover any gaps. At the end of the week, there will be a final one-to-one debrief, by which point the outcome should not be a surprise to anyone.

If successful, you will be awarded the RYA Coastal Skipper Certificate!
